Planina Lopučnica

Description of mountain pasture:
Lopučnica is a mountain pasture located below the Zgornje Komna plateau and above the Lopučnica valley near the Triglav Lakes. Planina Lopučnica is one of the coldest mountain pasture in Slovenia, with temperatures often dropping below -30 degrees Celsius on clear winter nights. The reason why it gets so cold is as follows. The Mountain pasture is surrounded by high mountains from which cold air, heavier than warm air, rushes down. Since this is the lowest point in the vicinity, cold air accumulates at mountain pasture. On windy days, the difference is less obvious or non-existent. It is also interesting to note that only grass thrives at the bottom of mountain pasture, but dwarf pines and other trees thrive higher up than we are. From mountain pasture there is a fine view of the surrounding peaks, which are rarely visited.
