Forestry cottage Rovtarica - Altemaver (Ratitovec)

Access to the starting point:
a) First drive to Škofja Loka, then continue to Železniki. In Železniki turn right for the route Rudno, Dražgoše and Bohinjska Bistrica. Towards Dražgoše, drive to Rudno, then turn slightly left towards Bohinjska Bistrica. Continue along the macadam road for some time, which climbs moderately for the first 10 km and then begins to descend towards the forestry cottage at Rovtarica, where you park at a suitable place at the junction of several roads.
b) Drive to Bohinjska Bistrica and continue to Soriška planina. After a few kilometres of climbing, we arrive at a crossroads where the road to Soriška planina turns sharp right, and we continue straight on in the direction of Železniki and Škofja Loka. The road then becomes macadam, and we follow it to the forestry hut at Rovtarica, where we park in a suitable place at the junction of several roads.

Path description:
From the forestry hut on Rovtarica, head in the direction of Bohinjska Bistrica. At first, walk along the main road for a few minutes, then the mountain signs for Ratitovec and Pečana direct you left onto the forest road. Continue climbing steeply through the vast forests of Jelovica and continue in the direction of Ratitovec at the crossroads. Higher up, the forest ends abruptly, as the path leads to an area that was hit by a severe windstorm on 29. 6. 2006. Here, at a crossroads, continue left and continue climbing up the scenic slope, from which a beautiful view opens up towards Jelovica, Triglav and the Karavanke Mountains. The road continues to climb for some time to the left, then returns to the forest and begins to turn more and more to the right. There is a short descent and the road leads us to the northern slopes of Zeleni vrh (1525 m). From here we occasionally get some views of Julian Alps, and we continue along the road, which occasionally descends a little further. When the road turns south again, however, we become alert, as it will soon cross the marked Ribčeva planina - Ratitovec trail.
When you reach the above-mentioned place where the road crosses the waymarked trail, turn left and continue uphill along the waymarked footpath. The path climbs moderately at first, then turns right and gradually descends to the nearby road. The ascent resumes along the road, and we walk along it for a few minutes to its end, where there is a large parking lot and a turning point.
From the parking lot we continue along the wide cart track, which starts to climb quite steeply through the forest. After about 10 minutes' walking, cart track is laid down, and then only a little further on leads to the huts at mountain pasture Pečana.
A few steps above these huts, we emerge from the forest onto grassy slopes, and we continue along the right-hand side of mountain pasture for just a few metres, and then at a crossroads we continue to the right in the direction of the Krek huts (straight Kosmati vrh). The way ahead begins to climb moderately through an increasingly sparse spruce forest. Higher up, we finally emerge from the forest onto the vast pastures of Ratitovec, where we leave cart track and continue our ascent along a slightly less visible, but marked path which, after a few minutes of further walking, leads us to the top slopes of Ratitovec, where we join the Krekova koča - Altemaver trail. Here continue right (Krekova koča 5 minutes on the left) and start climbing steeply along the pasture fence. After a few minutes of climbing, the path leads us to the eastern front of Altemaver. There is a short descent, and then the marked path turns slightly to the right. Exactly at the point where the marked trail leading to Soriška planina turns slightly to the right, we leave it and continue our ascent along a clearly visible trail in the direction of Altemaver Peak, which continues along the Ratitovec ridge. Follow this scenic route to the highest peak of Ratitovec, which is reached after a further 10 steps.
