Access to the starting point:
From the Ljubljana - Jesenice motorway, take the Lipce exit and turn right to Jesenice (left at the traffic lights). Here, in the centre of the town, follow the signs for Podmežaklo. When you pass through the underpass, turn right and you can see the hockey hall nearby. Drive for another 350 m and you will see a parking lot in front of the motorway underpass. Here is our starting point.
Path description:
From the parking lot, head towards the underpass, where you will see the first signpost on the right. When you go through it, you will see a path on the left leading downhill from the road (marker on the asphalt). Take it, climb a few metres and turn right (west) towards the power line. The path, which climbs only moderately at first and then more and more, leads us to a crossroads after a while. Here we turn left (straight Mala Mežakla), slightly steeper uphill to the south. Soon we reach a forest road, which leads us through a double bend to a wall of a dirt track, which climbs steeply to the right in a SE direction. Follow it for some time, ignoring the right forks of smaller shortcuts.
The path through the forest occasionally climbs serpentinely, at first slightly to the left. Once we have passed a major right-hand bend, signs direct us to a narrower path on the right. We are now facing SW. From here on, the path gradually climbs in larger or smaller bends towards the summit on the left. When we get under the rocks on the left, we are already close to the top of the plateau, and here we soon come to a crossroads of marked paths, which means that there are two options open to us.
The first is straight ahead (direction SW), which soon, when the steepness eases, leads to Zakop, where you will come across a forest road, turn left, and see a monument and benches (a small event space). The second option is left (direction SE), steeply uphill towards the top of the plateau, where you will come across the same road, which in the route to the left leads us towards the destination. Soon the road ends, and we continue along the path in the same direction, ignoring the left forks of the tracks. When the path finally climbs again, it reaches a forest road for the second time, which is crossed. After a few metres you reach the edge of the plateau at Škrbina, near which (left 2 min) is the Mežakla television transmitter. Here you will have a view of the valley, and continue right, uphill, along the edge of the plateau. Soon, when the steepness subsides, we walk along the panoramic path to the top of the northern face of Planski vrh. After a good 15 minutes' walk from Škrbine, about 20 m below the path, a relatively large natural rock bridge can be seen on the left, near which you can descend with caution (danger of slipping). The path continues in the same direction, soon turning right, and crosses the top of the plateau. Turning in a SE direction, the path descends to the overgrown cart track, where it turns right downhill, and shortly afterwards left, through the forest, and heads eastwards. After a while, the path crosses a forest road diagonally, passing through some fallen trees, and continues to descend in an easterly direction. As the path curves slightly to the right, it comes to a levelling at the end of the forest road. Turn right onto this road and follow it for a few minutes, whereupon markings and signs along the road direct you left onto a track which first turns left and climbs slightly, and then, after a few minutes' walk on rough forest terrain, leads you to the turn-off to the Snow Cave (sign on a tree), which is on the left-hand side, a few metres away from cart track. Equipped with a torch, follow the increasingly slippery path from the
