Access to the starting point:
a) Drive to Dravograd, then continue to Maribor. After the 8. 0 km road marker, pay attention, because a little after the bus stop and the pedestrian crossing, you will turn left into the Gortina settlement (the exit from the main road is not marked). As soon as you leave the main road you will arrive in Gortina, and we then drive in the direction of Muta, turning left at the marked crossroads, where you will see the signs for Bistriški trench. The road then leads quickly into the Bistriški trench, through which you climb steeply. Shortly after the 6 km marker, you reach a small crossroads, where you park in a suitable place before the bridge.
b) First drive into Maribor, then follow the signs for Dravograd. Once you have crossed Mučka Bistrica, turn right a little after the Tuš store in the direction of Muta 1. The road leads to Muta, where you follow the priority road at the crossroads and turn left at a slightly larger crossroads, continuing towards Gortina. A little after the Muta settlement ends, turn right at the marked crossroads towards Bistriški trench. The road then quickly leads into the Bistriški trench, through which you climb steeply. Shortly after the 6 km marker, you will reach a small crossroads, where you can park in a suitable place before the bridge.
Path description:
From the starting point, cross the Mučka Bistrica over the bridge, then immediately after the bridge continue left, initially walking along the river. Before the abandoned Lipnik mill, the path turns right and starts to climb cart track. Higher up, you reach the pastures of a nearby farm, and the well-marked cart track leads you to the Lipnik farm, which you pass on the right hand side. After the house, turn right onto the macadam road, and at the nearby crossroads, take a sharp left towards Pernice. The way ahead leads along a wider macadam road, where you pass individual farms and follow the signs at the crossroads. With fine views, we then reach a marked crossroads, where the markings for Pernice direct us slightly right, to cart track, which ascends crosswise and turns right at a higher altitude. After crossing the meadow, the path follows the edge of the wood for a while, then, once it has turned left, it enters the wood. Continue through the woods, crossing the road twice in succession higher up, and after a short cross-climb to the right, cross a small spring.
In front of the Porčnik homestead, the path turns left and then climbs to a slightly less well-marked crossroads at Razpotnikovo, where you continue along the left-hand cart track. Cart track returns to the forest and leads to the 1000 m height marker.
The track is laid here and leads us by the Church of St Simon and St Jude Thaddeus to an asphalt road, which we follow past the National Liberation Monument to a registration box located at the former mountain shelter at Knez na Pernice.
From the crossroads by the former mountain shelter, continue right in the direction of Huhnerkogel and St Urbana, first climbing through the forest, then the path becomes flatter and the forest is replaced by partly grassy terrain. A little further on you reach a macadam road, which you follow to the right towards Huhnerkogel, and at a nearby crossroads continue on the slightly left, upper road (slightly to the right, the farm Zgornji Čiček). Continue along the road for a short distance and then the signs for Huhnerkogel direct you slightly left onto the grassy cart track, which you continue to climb. At a higher level, go left from the above-mentioned cart track, and a few minutes further on, cross a worse road. There is a cross-climb of a few minutes and then you reach the ridge of Kozje Peak, where there is a marked crossroads.
From the crossroads, go right (left Kozji vrh less than 1 minute) and continue along the border ridge, descending gently. After 10 minutes, you emerge from the forest with the Church of St Urban just a short walk away.
Continue to the wooden signpost, where the signs for Huhnerkogel direct you slightly to the right, onto a path that leads into the forest. Continue along the border ridge, at first without any major changes in altitude, but after the weather station, which is located on the Slovenian side, there is a short descent. After the descent, we continue again for a while without any major changes in altitude, and then the trail leads us past a dilapidated bivouac located on the Austrian side of the border. We continue to climb for some time, gently to occasionally moderately, and then arrive at a marked crossroads, where the path from Lonhtar Farm joins us from the left.
Continue straight on towards Huhnerkogel, then continue climbing along and along the state border, and when the forest thins out further, a path leading past the Doma na Huhnerkogel joins us from the left.
Continue straight ahead and after a minute of further walking you will reach the top of Huhnerkogel.
