/ Rock ptarmigan (Lagopus mutus)
Rock ptarmigan (Lagopus mutus)
Rock ptarmigan which grows to 30-40cm belongs to family of forest hens. We can notice it on rocky slopes 1300 till aproximately 4000 metres height above sea level. It is hardly noticeable because of it's protective color. It eats bugs, strawberry bushes and also needles of conifers (larches, pines) in winter time. I mates in start of summer when it lays 6-12 eggs. It puts them in a nest which it builds on the ground between rocks and bushes.
