Last Friday, a friend and I left Ljubljana early in the morning with the idea of summiting Grossvenediger. After 2 trains, 1 bus and about 7 hours of travelling we finally arrived in Hinterbichl at about 13:30. Without losing any time, we started walking and we arrived at Johannishütte after slightly less than 2 hours. Up to that point it was possible to walk without snow almost all the way up. Anyways, for skiers: after more or less 1 hour of no snow hiking, it was possible to ski all the way up to the hut (conditions weren't the best though). From Johannishütte to Defreggerhaus things were different though. After Johannishütte conditions for skiing are just great and walking becomes a little nightmare in some parts (of course doing this part in the afternoon didn't help with snow conditions). We arrived at Defreggerhaus just before sunset.
Next morning we woke up early and left the hut at about 6:45. Without any major issues we summited in about 2 hours. The glacier is completely covered with snow and feels safe. In fact, there is a clearly marked way up. We were super lucky with the weather and could enjoy some impressive views with just some refreshing wind (haha). The way down to the valley was way less demanding and it basically took us 1 hour from the summit to the hut, 1 hour from hut to hut, and slightly more than 1 hour from this last hut to Hinterbichl.
