Description of peak:
Matkova kopa is a mountain in the Kamnik Savinja Alps mountain ridge between the Matkov kot and Belska Kočna valleys, which is difficult to access. Grebenc runs in a north-south direction and is also the border with neighbouring Austria. In the north it starts with the lowest peak Pavlič Peak (1339 m), followed by Pavlič Walls (1653 m), Lesnikovo sedlo (1517 m), Jerebičje (1761 m), Matkovo sedlo (1623 m), Matkov Grintovec (1700 m), Jevševec (1730 m), Matkova kopa (1957 m), Krničko sedlo (1803 m), Krnička gora (2061 m) and Mrzla gora (2203 m). The crossing of the ridge is very beautiful, but very challenging. The only summit with marked trails is Mrzla gora, all the others are accessible by unmarked shepherd-hunting trails and trackless paths.
Matkova kopa is reached from Matkov kot, from the farms of Kočnar, Matk and Perk, from Pavlič's Peak and from Belská Koča. The ascent to the summit itself is on a very difficult trackless path. The easiest access is from Matkova krnica above Matko's Corner.
The approach from all directions is very demanding, both technically, in terms of orientation and fitness. Therefore, the mountain is suitable only for experienced mountaineers with suitable equipment.
The locals are very hospitable in these parts. From talking to them, it is clear that they want this corner of the mountain to remain as secluded as it has been in the past.
