Fineilspitze

Description of mountain:
Fineilspitze (Italian: Punta di Finale) is a 3,514 m high border mountain separating the Austrian and Italian sections of the Ötztal Alps. It is located in the southern Ötztal range of Schnalskamm and gained global recognition when German hikers discovered a natural mummy on the slopes just below its rocky structure in 1991, later named "Ötzi". Despite Fineilspitze being the mountain geographically closest to the site, the status of "Ötzi's mountain" in popular perception went to its more prominent, higher, and more easily accessible neighbor Similaun, which attracts numerous visitors with the promise of a basic, technically straightforward glacier tour.

The approach to Fineilspitze, which perhaps somewhat unjustifiably remains in the shadow of expansive Similaun in terms of popularity, is on the other hand technically more demanding and unpredictable, although climbing the crumbly northeastern ridge—the normal route—in suitable conditions does not exceed the higher first grade of climbing.

This otherwise cramped and exposed summit offers a magnificent view in all directions: particularly noteworthy are the vistas of nearby Ötztal Alps peaks led by Wildspitze, Weißkugel, Similaun, and Hintere Schwärze, the white summits of Bernina, the expanses of the massive Hochjochferner glacier to the west below the peak, and the view over the southern Vernagt valley with its namesake lake deep below the memorial to its most famous Copper Age native.
