Access to the starting point:
a) Drive to Dravograd, then continue to Maribor. After the 8. 0 km road marker, pay attention, because a little after the bus stop and the pedestrian crossing, you will turn left into the Gortina settlement (the exit from the main road is not marked). As soon as you leave the main road you will arrive in Gortina, and we then drive in the direction of Muta, turning left at the marked crossroads, where you will see the signs for Bistriški trench. The road then leads quickly into the Bistriški trench, through which you climb steeply. Park at the former POŠ Branik, now the Music Centre, which is the sign on the building, but otherwise the building is used for various activities.
b) First drive to Maribor, then follow the signs for Dravograd. Once you have crossed Mučka Bistrica, turn right a little after the Tuš store in the direction of Muta 1. The road leads to Muta, where you follow the priority road at the crossroads, and from a slightly larger crossroads you turn left, so that you continue towards Gortina. A little after the Muta settlement ends, turn right at the marked crossroads towards Bistriški trench. The road then quickly leads into the Bistriški trench, through which you climb steeply. Park at the former POŠ Branik, now the Music Centre, which is the sign on the building, but otherwise the building is used for various activities.
Path description:
From the marked parking lot, continue along the asphalt road, which quickly leads to a marked crossroads by the ecological chapel behind the sports ground.
Continue left towards Pernice (Sedelnik waterfall and St Jernej on the right), and immediately go slightly further left from the road to cart track. Follow cart track up to a nearby farm, where go left behind a house onto the marked cart track. Cart track first climbs cross-country to the left, then turns right, and after a bend, leave it and continue slightly right on a waymarked footpath which begins to climb steeply through the woods. At a higher level, cross the older cart track, and after a further short climb, join the slightly wider cart track, which is also the route out of the woods. The way ahead leads past a hunting observation post, then cross a wider macadam road and continue along the road leading to the nearby Abram homestead. Above the homestead, we again follow the cart track, and the path leads us to a beautifully decorated chapel, above which the path becomes slightly steeper. The way ahead takes us along the route of the power lines, and higher up we cross the wider road once more. The path continues past the Hribernik homestead, above which the path gradually turns into woodland. There is a few minutes' climb through the woods, and then we arrive at the pastures below the Church of St Simon and St Jude Thaddeus, where the path loses its way. Continue along the increasingly beautiful views to the church, where you go left and walk past the NOB memorial to the former mountain shelter at Knez, where there is a registration box.
From the crossroads by the former mountain shelter, continue right in the direction of Huhnerkogel and St Urbana, first climbing through the forest, then the path flattens out and the forest is replaced by partly grassy terrain. A little further on you reach a macadam road, which you follow to the right towards Huhnerkogel, and at a nearby crossroads continue on the slightly left, upper road (slightly to the right, the farm Zgornji Čiček). Continue along the road for a short distance and then the signs for Huhnerkogel direct you slightly left onto the grassy cart track, which you continue to climb. At a higher level, go left from the above-mentioned cart track, and a few minutes further on, cross a worse road. There is a cross-climb of a few minutes and then you reach the ridge of Kozje Peak, where there is a marked crossroads.
From the crossroads, go right (left Kozji vrh less than 1 minute) and continue along the border ridge, descending gently. After 10 minutes, you emerge from the forest with the Church of St Urban just a short walk away.
Continue to the wooden signpost, where the signs for Huhnerkogel direct you slightly to the right, onto a path that leads into the forest. Continue along the border ridge, at first without any major changes in altitude, but after the weather station, which is located on the Slovenian side, there is a short descent. After the descent, we continue again for a while without any major changes in altitude, and then the trail leads us past a dilapidated bivouac located on the Austrian side of the border. We continue to climb for some time, gently to occasionally moderately, and then arrive at a marked crossroads, where the path from Lonhtar Farm joins us on the left.
Continue straight on towards Huhnerkogel, then continue climbing along and along the state border, and when the forest thins out further, a path leading past the Doma na Huhnerkogel joins us from the left.
Continue straight ahead and after a minute of further walking you will reach the top of Huhnerkogel.
