Access to the starting point:
Between Trenta and Bovec, the road to Lepena branches off at the village of Soča. Follow this road, which is completely asphalted, to the parking area of the Dr. Klement Hugo House in Lepena.
Path description:
From the Home of Dr Klement Hugo in Lepena, follow the path towards Dom pri Krnskih jezerih, Gomiščkovo zavetišče na Krnu and the Dom na Komni. Right from the parking lot, the trail turns into a forest, through which it climbs on a wide mulatier. The mulatier is mostly a moderate ascent (the steep ascent in the lower part has been out of use for some time) through the forest, with only occasional views of the valley and the surrounding mountains. During the ascent, we also cross the route of a cargo cableway several times, which is forbidden to cross when the cableway is not in operation. After a good hour and a half of walking, the trail lays down and leads us just a little further to the top station of the cargo cableway.
From here on, the path leads along the edge of a small valley, and quickly leads to the place where the snow cover is measured every April. There is a short descent and then we arrive at a marked crossroads where we leave the wide path leading to the Lodge at Krnsko jezero and Krnsko jezero and continue slightly left towards Velika Baba.
From the crossroads continue for a short time without any major changes in altitude, but when the path from Dom pri Krnskih jezerih joins us from the right, continue left and start to climb, first gently and then moderately. When the forest ends a little further on, we get a nice view of the walls from Kaludra to Velika Baba. For a few minutes we continue to climb relatively gently at the foot of the already overgrown scree, and then the path turns right and starts to climb a little more, crossing the slopes to the right. During the cross-climb, which in some places is also exposed to falling rocks, we get increasingly beautiful views of Veliki Šmohor, Krn, Lemež, Debeljak, higher up also Kanin, and below us we can see Lake Dupeljsko and the Dom pri Krnskih jezeri. . . Higher up, the trail climbs over a small scree slope below Zelena notch, and then gradually arrives in the valley between Velika Baba on the left and Velika Montura on the right. After a few minutes of climbing up the valley, we reach a crossroads where the marked trail to Velika Baba turns left, and we continue straight ahead on an unmarked trail that continues along the right side of the valley. When the slopes on the right become a little less steep, you will notice that you are walking on an old dirt track, which has been pretty much destroyed in the lower part, but is still traceable higher up. Climb along the edge of the valley for a few minutes, then turn right along the mulatier (there is a track along the edge of the valley which leads to the Bogatinski saddle). Continue along the mulatier, which is mostly quite easy to follow, with a cairn here and there. Higher up, the mulatier splits into two parts, and we take the right (straight ahead is another route that can be used to reach Bogatinsko sedlo, and from this route we can then climb to Velika Montura via a trackless path). There is a few minutes of climbing mostly to the right, and then we reach an indistinct ridge where the mulatier first turns left, and then off to the slightly steeper western slopes. As the slope flattens out, we see the old Italian fortifications from the time of the Rappal border on the left, and we pass three dilapidated buildings to climb to the nearby viewpoint of the summit of the Great Montura. Description and figures refer to the situation in 2017 (July).
