Krnica - Kucelj na Čavnu (via Veliki Rob)

Access to the starting point:
a) From Nova Gorica take Solkan in the direction of Bovec, then at the last semaphorised junction, already at the exit from Solkan, continue straight on towards Lokva (Bovec on the left, the bypass on the right). Continue driving to the village Trnovo, where at the beginning of the village by the forestry building turn right in the direction of the hamlet of Rijavci (signposted). Follow the main road through Rijavci, continue past Kopitnik and along the macadam to the forestry hut at Cirque, where turn right again at the junction on the asphalt. Continue for a few dozen metres to a large clearing on the left (timber harvest), where you can park. If there is a logging operation in the clearing, continue across the serpentine and park at the first suitable place along the road.
b) From Tolmin drive to the beginning of Solkan and turn left at the first traffic lights towards Lokva (continue as described from Nova Gorica).

Path description:
From the starting point, continue along the asphalt road over the serpentine. The road then flattens out and after about 200 metres a sign on a pole directs us sharp right to the worse cart track. Cart track, which runs almost parallel to the road, is only followed for a short time as a new direction sign on a tree directs us to the left onto the marked path towards the Big Edge. (At this point, the path is joined by a shortcut from the road, marked cairn, which shortens the detour along cart track). The path climbs moderately for a short time at first, and then follows the well-trodden and marked path only gently through the forest. When the new marking directs us to the right towards the ridge, the path starts to climb steeply again and soon we reach the ridge from where we get a view of the Vipava valley, and from the right we join the path from Vitovlje. At the crossroads, continue left towards the summit, which you can already see in front of you. The path ahead from the ridge curves slightly to the left and gives way to steep cliffs. The path climbs through a short lane of a forest and leads to the top slope of the mountain, from where it is only a few 10 steps to the summit.
From the top of Veliki Rob, an inscription on a rock directs us to the right towards Kuclj. There is a short descent along the ridge and then through the forest, after which the path flattens out for a short time. The trail continues through the forest or along the edge of the plateau, from where we have beautiful views across the Vipava valley. Then a longer and slightly steeper descent leads to a connection with the old road link between the Vipava valley (Vrtovin) and the Trnovo plateau. Follow the road connection to the right, and then the signs at the crossroads direct you to the left onto a footpath, which is quite overgrown in the initial part. When the lane of bushes ends, the path climbs gently over wide grassy slopes to a crossroads where the footpath from Vrtovina joins from the right. At the crossroads, continue straight ahead and after a short, slightly steeper climb, you will soon reach the top of Kuclja.
Krnica - Veliki Rob 40 min, Veliki Rob - Kucelj 1 hour.
The trip can be extended to Anton Bavčar's hut at Čavno (45 min).
