Access to the starting point:
From the road Bovec - Border crossing Predel, take the road in the direction of Mangartsko sedlo and follow it to the marked parking lot in front of Mangartska planina, where you park.
Path description:
From the starting point, continue along the road on the left in the direction of Mangartska planina (if you continue straight ahead you can reach Mangartsko sedlo) and after a short descent cross the torrent, after which you will reach the edge of Mangartska planina and a crossroads.
From the crossroads, go right (the mountain range on the left) and follow the marked path towards Mangartski sedlo. The way ahead leads along an older abandoned road, but as we approach the gravel areas on the left, the older cart track branches off to the left, which we continue along. The path soon curves further to the left and after a few steps leads to the place where cairn usually stands. From cairn continue to the gravel, where a traceable but unmarked path appears, leading across the Dren. Initially climb along the left edge of the gravel, but here and there the path goes a little further to the left, into the lane of the dwarf pines or low forest. Higher up, you reach a gravel pit a few more times, and then the path turns into a more grassy area, where you gradually move to the right side of the valley. Climb up the right-hand side of the valley to a point where the path is temporarily lost, and continue climbing in the same direction, stopping at dwarf pines.
Here you go transversely to the left, where the path reappears (if you continue straight or slightly to the right, you reach the cliffs of Mala Ruše, over which it is possible to approach the summit), and after a short climb, it is laid down and passes to the south-western slopes, over which you descend transversely to the state border. There is an easy ascent along a scenic ridge, and then at the Čez stože saddle you join the marked trail that leads along the Stože landslide.
From the saddle, which offers a fine view of Šober, continue straight ahead (left down Mangartska planina on the marked path), and cross over to the right, Italian side of the ridge. At first we cross a rather steep and especially in wet conditions dangerous slope (the steep part can be avoided by continuing on the lower path), then we mostly cross-climb under the walls of Vršič and the side peak of Veliki Grintavec. The cross-climb ends at the Vraška notch / La Portella, where it joins the trail from Rablja / Cave del Predil. From the Vraška notch we continue to the right in the direction of the Cinque Punte bivouac, and the way forward leads us along the very scenic ridge of the Šober peak, which opens up a beautiful view towards Viš, Mangart, Jalovec and other surrounding mountains. The path along the ridge climbs gently for the most part, with only a slight dip here and there. After about 30 minutes of ridge walking, we reach the summit of Šober, from which we can already see the cairn on the nearby main peak. There is a short descent from the summit, and once past the main peak, continue right on an unmarked path, which takes you up to the summit (the last few metres are quite steep) in a minute of steep walking.
Starting point - Čez stože - 1:35, Čez stože - Vraška notch 0:25, Vraška notch - Šober 0:35.
Description and pictures refer to the situation in 2018 (September).
