Access to the starting point:
From the road Bovec - Border crossing Predel, take the road in the direction of Mangartsko sedlo and follow it to the marked parking lot in front of Mangartska planina, where you park.
Path description:
From the starting point, take the road to the left in the route Mangartska planina (straight ahead Mangartsko sedlo), where you can walk for a few minutes to the shepherd's hut where sheep's cheese can be bought during the grazing season.
A few 10 steps before the shepherd's hut, at the part where the marked path goes towards the "valley" (starting point Pri Mlinču), continue north on the footpath in the direction of the saddle Čez stože (on the signpost Čez stožje).
From mountain pasture the trail quickly passes into the forest, through which it climbs steeply for some time, and higher up it approaches the Stože landslide, which slipped down into the valley in November 2000 and buried part of the village of Log pod Mangartom almost 1000 metres below. Climb along the avalanche for some time, after which the trail becomes lane of dwarf pines, through which, with fine views, we climb to the saddle Čez stože, where we reach the state border and where the unmarked trail over the Dren joins us from the right.
From the saddle, where you get your first view of Šober, continue left and cross over to the right, Italian side of the ridge. At first, we cross a rather steep and, especially in wet conditions, dangerous slope (the steep part can be avoided by continuing on the lower path), and then we mostly cross-climb under the walls of Vršič and the side peak of Veliki Grintavec. The cross-climb ends at the Vraška notch / La Portella, where it joins the trail from Rablja / Cave del Predil.
From Vraška notch continue to the right towards the Cinque Punte bivouac, and the way ahead leads us along the very scenic ridge of Šober, which offers a beautiful view towards Viš, Mangart, Jalovec and the other surrounding mountains. The path along the ridge climbs gently for the most part, with only a slight dip here and there. After about 30 minutes of ridge walking, we reach the summit of Šober, from which we can already see the cairn on the nearby main peak. There is a short descent from the summit, and once past the main peak, continue right on an unmarked path, which takes you up to the summit (the last few metres are quite steep) in a minute of steep walking.
Starting point - planšarija 0:05, planšarija - Čez stože 1:15, Čez stože - Vraška notch 0:25, Vraška notch - Šober 0:35. Description and figures refer to the situation in 2018 (September).
