Path description:
The starting point is a village called Mátala, on the southern coast of Crete island in Greece.
At the crossroads at a picturesque snag of the olive tree from which the artist Spyros Stefanakis cut out the facial sculptures, head into the village and walk by souvenir shops and restaurants.
In a small square, follow the sign for a "Red beach", i.e., the street on the left-hand side (and not a road that goes closer to the coast). In just a few meters, turn right and then immediately left. When you reach the stairs, you will see a path that begins just to the left of the stairs. Follow this path to the saddle of Cape Mátala (Ákra Mátala), where an unmarked trail branches off to Koules of Mátala / Mátala tower; Gr. Κουλές Ματάλων) just a minute of walking distance away.
From the top there is a beautiful view of the beach in Mátala (Zeus Beach) and the uninhabited island of Paximadia in the Libyan Sea.
The description and images refer to the situation from August 2022.
