Access to the starting point:
First, drive to Cortina d'Ampezzo (you can get here via Border crossing Rateče or Predel to Trbiž / Tarvisio and then take the motorway towards Udine to the Tolmezzo exit. From Tolmezzo, follow the road towards Ampezzo and the Passo della Mauria mountain pass. The road then descends and leads to a crossroads where you turn left (possibly right) towards Cortina d'Ampezzo. At all subsequent junctions, follow the signs for Cortina d'Ampezzo. Or from the Primorska side, take the motorway towards Trieste. Continue on the Italian motorway towards Padua, but only as far as the motorway junction where you continue towards Veneto and Belluno. Near Belluno, the motorway ends and we continue towards Cortina d'Ampezzo at the next junctions and then follow the signs for the Passo di Falzarego Alpine pass. We then follow this ascending road to a junction at about 1400m. At the crossroads, turn left towards the Passo di Giau and the Marmolada. Follow this road until you reach the parking lot under the mountain pasture of Malga Giau. The parking lot is on the right hand side before a sharp right turn at an altitude of about 1960m.
Path description:
From the parking lot, continue along the main road, at the right-hand bend you can either take a shortcut straight across the pasture or continue along the main road. If you continue along the road, the road first turns right uphill at the left-hand bend towards mountain pasture Malga Giau, and we continue along the road for another 200 metres, where we will then see signs on the left and the start of the footpath. Just before the start of the footpath there is another small parking lot on the right hand side of the road.
Take the footpath in the direction of the Forcella Giau notch. The path first crosses the pastures to the south and descends gently. It crosses some marshy terrain and joins the above-mentioned shortcut on the left. We continue straight on and start climbing again. The path then alternates between grassy slopes and strips of sparse larch forest, and continues southwards. A little higher, as we approach the slopes of Monte Formin, we reach a crossroads where the path from Passo Giau joins us from the right.
At the crossroads, continue straight ahead towards the Forcella Giau notch and the path opens up to increasingly beautiful views of the Tofana and Sella mountain groups. This path then leads to the aforementioned notch where the view opens up to the south, where Monte Pelmo stands out.
At the notch where the crossroads are, the well-trodden path 436 branches off to the left towards the Forcella Ambrizola notch, and we turn right onto the less visible path 465. The poorly visible path here starts to descend on grassy slopes and leads us to the crossroads.
The marked path here turns right towards the Val Cernera valley, and we take a slight left onto an unmarked archaeological trail that leads past large boulders towards the smaller lake Lago delle Baste, which has been visible from the path for some time. The trail continues to descend until it reaches the lake.
On the other side of the lake, where the path towards mountain pasture Malga Mondeval di sopra and the Mesolithic archaeological site turns left, we turn right onto a slightly less visible path along the ridge. We continue to climb along the ridge towards the summit of Corvo Alto. The path follows the eastern left side of the ridge, where the slopes are grassy and relatively gentle, while the western right side of the ridge is precipitous. Continue along the increasingly scenic path along the ridge to the summit.
