Access to the starting point:
From Trbiž / Tarvisio, take the motorway to Udine. Leave the motorway at the exit for Tolmezzo. Follow the signs for Austria and the Passo di Croce Carnico / Plockenpass. On the Italian side of the pass, park in a large parking lot.
Path description:
At the parking lot, take the narrow road marked Rifuggio Marinelli (route 146). After a few dozen metres, you will reach a crossroads where you turn right onto a military mulatier, which you then follow up through sparse woodland and meadows below the steep slopes of mountain Creta di Collinetta (2238m). The military mulatier becomes a track and soon you will reach a marked crossroads, where a path branches off to the right to Creta di Collinetta and Cresta Verde.
You can either turn right here towards Cresta Verde or continue left towards the Marinelli hut. If you continue to the left, the path initially crosses grassy slopes in a slight ascent and leads to a small plain. An unmarked path from mountain pasture Collinetta di Sotto joins from the left, and just after this we reach a marked crossroads.
To the left is route 146 towards the Marinelli hut, and this time we turn right on route 147 towards the Cresta Verde ridge. The gentle path first takes us over mountain pasture and then leads us under a steep rocky slope where we will also see some military ruins. The path here starts to climb steeply up the grassy slope and we also start to get better views of the surrounding peaks. The path climbs mostly in switchbacks and a little higher up, the aforementioned path joins from the right, branching off from the path to Creta di Collinetta.
The ascent continues along a mostly grassy slope until the Cresta Verde ridge, where you will again see a number of military ruins from the First World War along the way. The path from the top of Creta di Collinetta joins here on the right. We continue to the left along the grassy ridge which leads us below the eastern slopes of the Creta di Collina. Here an unmarked path joins us from the Austrian side.
The trail then becomes more difficult, mostly on steep grassy slopes and occasionally requiring some easy climbing. A little higher up, the path turns left and leads to slightly rockier terrain. The slope becomes a shade steeper and a short rope is helpful for the slightly more exposed traverse. The path then turns to the right and leads us along the ravine back to the grassy terrain where the steepness eases slightly. The path then turns to the left and leads us to the south-eastern slopes on which the ascent is no longer difficult. The path is slightly less visible here, but the markings (red dots) and cairns help us to find our way. The slope becomes more and more rocky as we continue to climb towards the ridge. When you reach the ridge, which is precipitous on the north side, continue left and you will soon reach the summit.
The route described is not belayed and for the less experienced an additional belaying with a rope is recommended.
For the descent, the more suitable route is route 171, which runs along the south side of the mountain. From the summit, continue along the initially exposed ridge and then descend left down to join the 146 route towards the Marinelli hut. The lower part of the trail is protected by a cable car. Then follow the 146 back to the starting point at the Plöckenpass.
