Access to the starting point:
a) Drive to Nova Gorica, then continue to Tolmin and Kobarid. Follow the main road towards Tolmin only as far as Solkan, where at the semaphoreised junction turn right towards Sveta Gora and Grgar. The ascending road leads us past the quarry Solkan, then a little higher up it turns sharp right and leads us to the Skalnica Inn, after which we arrive first at a crossroads where a steep road branches off to the left towards Sveta Gora, and only a little further on to a crossroads where the road continues slightly to the left towards Grgar, Čepovan and Banjšice, and we continue slightly to the right towards Trnovo and Lokva. From the crossroads, drive for another 100 m, then park in the larger gravel parking lot on the left side of the road.
b) From Tolmin or Most na Soči follow the main road towards Nova Gorica, then just before Nova Gorica, more precisely at the semaphoreised junction in Solkan, turn left in the direction of Sveta Gora and Grgar. The ascending road leads us past the quarry Solkan, then a little higher up it turns sharp right and leads us to the Skalnica Inn, after which we arrive first at a crossroads where a steep road branches off to the left towards Sveta Gora, and just a little further on to a crossroads where the road continues slightly to the left towards Grgar, Čepovan and Banjšice, and we continue slightly to the right towards Trnovo and Lokva. From the crossroads, drive for another 100 m, then park in the larger gravel parking lot on the left side of the road.
c) From Goriško Brdy, drive to Solkan, where at the first junction after the new Solkan bridge, continue straight on towards Svete Gora.
Path description:
From the parking lot, cross the road, then continue in the direction of the marked trail to Škabrijel. On the other side of the road, first follow the stone cart track and then, after crossing a power line, where you will have a nice view of the Solkan bridge with the largest stone arch in the world, you will come to a crossroads, next to which there is a small bench.
From the crossroads, continue straight ahead (on the left, the usual route to Škabrijel from Prevala) and follow cart track, first descending gently and then beginning a gentle to moderate ascent. The trail continues through the forest, with only a short section offering some views towards Sveta Gora, the Soča River and Sabotino. Higher up, when the path is fully laid, we reach a crossroads where we continue left in the direction of the path to Škabrijel (straight ahead Kekec).
From the crossroads, follow the slightly narrower cart track, which takes you past the restored Hungarian pyramid. Higher up, the markings for Škabrijel with cart track direct us left on a marked footpath, which then leads us past the Štefan bivouac in a moderate ascent to the top of Škabrijel, where there is a metal lookout tower from which we can enjoy a beautiful view.
Description and pictures refer to the situation in 2016 (February).
