Access to the starting point:
From Bialystok/Villach, drive to Hermagor and on to Lienz, but only as far as the village of Reisach. In the village, turn right and follow the ascending road to the guesthouse Reißkofel, near which you park.
Path description:
Along the road near the hut you will see signs directing you left on the footpath (Reißkofel Biwak). After a few metres walk you come to a crossroads where you turn left (Schmalzgruben Welzberg). After a short descent you are at the crossroads again, this time turn right following the signs for Ochsenschlucht Alm (route 233). The path then starts to climb through the forest and leads to a meadow. The path passes along the right-hand side of the meadow and then passes a few houses to reach the signposts (follow the signs for Reißkofelbiwak). Climb across the meadow again, this time on the left-hand side. At the end of the meadow, the path then turns right into the wods and climbs initially on the fainter cart track, which quickly becomes a track. The path then climbs steeply through the forest for some time and crosses a mountain road several times. In the last part of the way towards the bivouac, you emerge from the forest onto grassy slopes with beautiful views of the neighbouring Torkofel and the Carnic Alps.
At the bivouac, follow the signs for Reißkofel (route 223). Just above the bivouac, the path turns right and starts to climb through dwarf pines, which gradually becomes more and more sparse. When you reach the ridge, you have a view of the steep slopes of the Reißkofl. The path along the wide grassy ridge soon leads to the entrance to the climbing part of the route.
First climbing along the ridge along the steel cable, the route then turns slightly left onto the north-west slopes and climbs steeply along the steel cable. The path is almost vertical in places and you need to be especially careful because the slope is quite crumbly and there is a lot of rubble on the path. When you reach the ridge again, turn left and continue along the narrow, unprotected ridge. The path then turns slightly to the left and crosses steep slopes. Here the path becomes a little less difficult, but due to the rubble on the path, considerable caution is still needed. There is a short descent and then the steep northern slopes are traversed. There are also a few ravines where there may still be some snow in early summer. The path is secured in the more dangerous parts by a steel cable or a rope. In the last part, the path becomes a little less difficult and a few metres below the summit, an easier path joins from the left, leading along the eastern ridge. There is a short climb up to the viewpoint.
