Access to the starting point:
a) From Kranjska Gora via the Koren saddle to Austria, where at the first major junction continue left towards Podkloštro / Arnoldstein and Trbiz / Tarvisio. At the end of Podklošter, signs for Šmohor / Hermagor direct you to the right on the regional road, which takes you past the town to the end of the Ziljska Valley, or more precisely to Kötschach-Mauthen, where you turn right towards Oberdrauburg. The road continues over the Gailbergsattel Alpine pass (982 m), after which you descend into the above-mentioned town. After crossing a bridge over the River Drava, turn left towards Lienz. At the main roundabout in Lienz, turn left towards Sillian and Itali. Next we cross the national border between Austria and Itali, and we follow the main road past Dobbiaco / Toblach, Villabassa / Niederdorf, Monguelfo - Tesido / Welsberg - Taisten, Brunico / Bruneck. Just after the last mentioned town, which is passed by a bypass road, we turn left into the Val Badia valley. Continue along the valley and turn left at Longega towards San Vigilio. In San Vigilio, turn left at the crossroads after the "Pederü" signs. After about 200 metres, turn right, also after the 'Pederü' signs. Follow this road until you reach the large parking lot in front of the Rifugio Pederü.
b) From Nova Gorica, exit into Itali and follow the motorway to Venice/Venezia. At Portogruaro, leave the motorway towards Venice and turn right on the motorway towards Pordenone. At the next motorway junction near Conegliano, turn right towards Belluno. The motorway ends near Belluno and we continue towards Cortina d'Ampezzo at the next junctions. When you arrive in Cortina d'Ampezzo, follow the signs for the Passo Falzarego Alpine pass. At the Passo Falzarego (2105 m), turn right towards the Valparola Pass and continue towards Alta Badia. At La Villa turn right towards Brunico. Follow the road to Longega and turn right towards San Vigilio. In San Vigilio, turn left at the crossroads after the "Pederü" signs. After about 200 metres, turn right, also after the "Pederü" signs. Follow this road until you reach the large parking lot in front of the Rifugio Pederü.
Path description:
From the parking lot, continue to the crossroads behind the cottage. Signposts point slightly right on the footpath towards the Lavarela and Fanes huts, while the path to the left leads to the Fodara Vedla hut. The level path first crosses a stream and a road, then begins to climb slightly steeper through dwarf pines. After an initial slightly steeper section, the path becomes flatter further on, and also descends slightly for a short section. The path briefly joins the road a few times, and then rejoins the road, passing mainly through dwarf pines on the right side of the valley.
The path then turns slightly to the right and the views of the surrounding peaks start to open up. Later, we rejoin the mountain road, which runs along the Rü dal Plan stream. The road then climbs gently and leads to a crossroads.
The road to the right leads to hut Rifugio Lavarella (5 minutes), and we continue left at the crossroads. The road then climbs slightly and soon leads to the hut.
At the hut, take route 10 towards the Limo Pass and the mountain pasture Gran Fanes. At first, the ascent is a little steeper, following a footpath through the forest, which leads back to the road. Continue right along the scenic road. A little higher up, the road turns left and leads along grassy slopes to the Ju de Limo saddle (Passo di Limo in Italian, Limopass in German).
The road descends a little from the saddle and quickly leads to Lake Lago di Limo, where the road branches off to the left towards the summit of Col Bechei.
From the lake we continue along the sloping road, which soon leads us to another crossroads.
A footpath branches off to the left down towards the Valle di Fanes, and we continue to the right along a scenic road which continues to descend slightly. A little further down, the dirt road from Valle di Fanes joins us on the left. From the crossroads, it's just a short descent down the scenic road to the Ütia de Gran Fanes hut.
From the hut, continue along the mountain pasture scenic road and descend a little further. The road then crosses a small bridge and soon leads to a marked crossroads.
At the crossroads, turn left onto the Fridensweg / Via della pace (Path of Peace), which leads from the crossroads initially along a grassy slope and then into a belt of very sparse larch and pine woods. The path is further marked with the number 17 and with the VB and FR markings, indicating the Vallon Bianco and Furcia Rossa peaks. The trail continues to climb gently and follows the old military causeway to the south-east. The path slowly curves slightly to the left and the view to the east of the Valle di Fanes begins to open up. The mulatiera here leads us onto more rocky terrain, which soon leads to a crossroads.
To the right is route 17 towards Monte Castello or bivouac Bivacco della Pace, and we continue left along the path towards the peaks of Furcia Rossa and Vallon Bianco. From the crossroads, the path then crosses the slopes a little further east for some time and leads to slightly steeper slopes. The ascent is mostly in switchbacks up a steep slope and the path leads to the next crossroads.
To the right, a protected climbing route branches off towards the Furcia Rossa III summit and on towards the Bivacco della Pace bivouac. At the crossroads, we continue left and climb for a while along the scenic route. The path then turns slightly to the right and leads us along a wide shelf and then along the top edge of the scree to the crossroads again.
To the left, the path leads to the Vallon Bianco peak, and we continue straight on to the Furcia Rossa III peak, next to which there is a small bivouac called Bivacco Baccon Barborka. From the crossroads, continue in the same direction and climb southwards under the wall. The trail then turns right and climbs up the rocky slope towards the main ridge. Just before the ridge, continue left and quickly reach the Bivacco Baccon Barborka bivouac. From the bivouac, you can climb a few metres to the Furcia Rossa III peak, from where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the peaks above the Val Travenanzes valley.
We descend along the ascent route.
