Access to the starting point:
First we drive to Nova Gorica and then continue our drive to Tolmin. At the end of the village Solkan, turn left into a large parking area in front of the Solkan Bridge.
From Tolmin, drive towards Nova Gorica, but only as far as the village of Solkan. At the beginning of the village, turn right and park in the large parking lot behind the Solkan bridge.
The starting point is at the parking lot at the end of Solkan, which can be reached by public bus from Nova Gorica or Šempeter.
Path description:
From the parking lot, cross the Solkan Bridge and then on the other side of the bridge, you will see the mountain signs for Sabotin (southern and northern trail). To climb Sabotin on the northern trail, first descend under the bridge and then walk up the trail that runs along the Soča River and the railway. The gently sloping, or horizontal, path then takes you past the Solkan hydroelectric power station and, after about half an hour's walk from the starting point, leads you to the mountain signposts, where you continue upwards to the left. The path continues to climb moderately, following an old military causeway to a beautiful lookout point with a bench. Here the path turns left and after a further few minutes of ascent leads us to a crossroads where we have two options for continuing. Continue to the right in the direction of Sabotina (left Sabotin, past the ruins of St Valentine's), along a path that gradually starts to climb steeper and steeper. The steeper and steeper path, however, leads us under the cliffs of the upper slopes of Sabotino. The path then crosses the steep slope (easy) with the help of a moderate incline and then climbs up to the numerous caverns (it is a good idea to carry a torch to walk through the tunnels). Before the caverns, the path turns to the left and climbs up the steps again with the help of a rope ladder. There is a steep climb through the military tunnels and the path leads to the house on Sabotino.
