Access to the starting point:
From Ljubljana:
From the main road towards Domžale, turn left at the traffic lights at the "Trzin - Mlake" exit. Just after the turn-off, turn right onto Ljubljanska cesta and drive towards the newer part of Trzina. Just before the road crosses the bridge over the Pšata River, turn left onto the narrow road Za hribom (Behind the hill), which leads to the old village centre of Trzin and the church of St Florijan. Just before you reach the church, you will see a parking lot on the right and a large sign for the Onger Forest Trail.
From the route of Domžale:
Leave the main road towards Ljubljana in Trzin at the semaphore-controlled exit for Mengeš, Kamnik, Kranj. Just after the turn-off, turn left onto Ljubljanska cesta and drive through the newer part of Trzin. Just after the bridge over the Pšata River, turn right onto the narrow road Za hribom (Behind the Hill), which leads to the old village centre of Trzin and the Church of St Florijan. Just before you reach the church, you will see a parking lot on the right and a large sign for the Onger Forest Trail.
From the route of Mengeš:
If you do not know the area of Trzin along the Mengeš road well, it is best to take the Mengeš - Trzin road to the last semaphore crossing before the connection to the Ljubljana - Domžale main road. Turn right onto Ljubljansko cesta and drive through the newer part of Trzin.
From the centre of Trzin, you can reach the starting point on foot via the footbridge over the Pšata River near the Trzin Primary School. Unlike other car parks in Trzin, there is no charge and no time limit.
Path description:
At the starting parking lot, cross the road Za hribom at the marked crossing, turn left and immediately head up the steps, which branch off slightly to the right. At the end of the stairs turn left. After a few metres, a new set of stairs branches off gently to the right. Next to the second bench on these steps (not far from the end), a short but more difficult shortcut branches off to the right. If you continue up the stairs to the end, turn sharp right onto the road, which climbs steeply uphill. Although the forest trail officially starts a little further along this road, next to the water tower, we leave the road a few metres further on at the first sharp left-hand bend, where we can see a narrow path branching off into the forest on the right. From here on we walk through the woods all the way to the castle. Soon, the aforementioned shortcut joins us from the right.
The path climbs quite steeply at first. After about 200 m, you reach a macadam forest road, where you join a forest nature trail (albeit in the opposite direction to the official one), which is "marked" with signs with the names of trees on some of the trees. The road climbs for some time up Onger Hill (which separates the centre of Trzina from the Mlaka area) and after about 500 metres reaches its highest point, after which it gradually begins to descend. The Mengeš field can be seen almost all the time through the trees on our left. A little further on, the "Lookout Point", where there is also a bench, offers the most beautiful views across the Mengeš field towards Domžale, Kamnik, Mengeš, etc.
A little further from the lookout point, the macadam road ends abruptly. The western section of the trail (which also starts at the aforementioned water tower) joins us from the left, and we continue straight along the well-trodden path. There are a few forks here and there, but you just have to keep to the most beaten track and head north, keeping your eyes almost always on the Mengeš field to the east. The path is still gently descending. Once you can see the castle through the trees, there are a few more forks. Grad can be reached by any of them.
From the castle you can continue the tour towards other destinations, you can return to Trzin along the road just below the hill, or you can follow the same path again, and when the path becomes a macadam road, you can optionally take it to the right, following the western branch of the trail, which is parallel to and only a few metres away from the eastern one described above, and leads you to the water reservoir in Mlaki.
