Agia Roumeli (Crete)

Description of mountain:
Agia Roumeli (gr. Αγιά Ρούμελη) is a small seaside Greek village on the southern coast of Crete at the Libyan Sea. The village has no road connections, only trails and ferries connect it to the outside world (most frequent in the summer).

In the majority of cases, the village is the endpoint of the 16 km hike through Samaria Gorge and the additional 2 that remain to the village. The direction of the hike is usually undertaken from north to south by descending 1230 meters of altitude this way.

Samaria Gorge, officially called the National Park of Samaria since 1962 (gr. Φαράγγι της Σαμαριάς / Φάραγγας), is one of the most visited destinations of Crete (in comparison, the highest peaks of Crete like TImios Stavros / Psiloritis or Pachnes are much less frequently visited with only handful of visitors per day). It is probably the most convenient to join the organized trip, since they are offered everywhere on the island. The organized trip usually includes a bus ride to Xyloskalo to an altitude of 1230 meters, a tour guide, a ferry ride to some of the neighbouring villages with road connections, and from there a bus ride back. In August, the cost of such a trip was around 40 euros.

In the park, mind the restrictions (no camping, smoking, lighting fires, swimming, staying only from 7:00 to 15:00. The park is open only from 1st May to 15th October. There is an entrance fee (in the case of an organized trip, the fee is included in the price of the trip).
