Description of church:
Diga del Vajont is a 261 metres high and 190 metres wide dam located in the Pordenone region, east of Longarone. The dam was built in 1961 and is best known for the catastrophic accident that occurred on 9 October 1963. The reservoir above the dam, which wetted the ground, triggered a huge avalanche from Monte Toc and filled the lake. The avalanche pushed the water over the dam and a large wave then floded the village of Longarone in the Piave valley. The disaster killed 1 917 people, including 487 children under 15 years of age. A chapel was built at the dam to commemorate the victims, and in 2015 a protected climbing route, the Ferrata della Memoria, was created along the gorge below the dam. In 2008, UNESCO declared the disaster to be one of the 5 worst disasters of all time, for which engineers and geologists were responsible.
