Description of peak:
Mt. Agung (3031m) is the highest mountain and volcano in Bali. The mountain used to be 100m higher, but the eastern peak recently collapsed, so the higest peak is now the western part of the volcano's crater rim.
Agung has a major religious significance to the Balinese people. They believe that the mountain is the replica of the Mt. Meru, i.e. the central axis of the universe.
The last major eruption occured in 1964. There were 2000 casulties and 100 tousands homeless (this was one of the largest 20th century eruptions anywhere in the world.). This happened just a few days after the major religius ceremony held in Bali, which takes place only in intervals of more than hundred years.
The following two approaches are most popular: (1) from Besakih temple to the summit (6-7 hoursof ascent) and (2) from Pasar Agung Temple to the crater rim at 2866m.
