Description of peak:
With a height of between 3393 and 3396 m, Hohe Geige is one of the highest and most important peaks in the northern part of the Ötztal Alps. As the summit of one of the central groups of the Geigenkamm mountain range, it receives a considerable number of visitors, which is further enhanced by the relative ruggedness of the otherwise attractive approach via the west ridge and by the fact that it is one of the highest peaks in Austria, which can usually be climbed in high season without winter equipment.
As Hohe Geige exceeds in height all the peaks in the northern part of the Ötztal Alps, with the exception of a few bold towers of the parallel Kaunergrat mountain range, it serves as an eminent lookout point: particularly attractive are the views of the Pitztal valley deep below and the bold Kaunergrat above, which hosts some of the most difficult to reach peaks in Austria, the unique view of the mighty glaciers of the central (highest) part of the mountain range, over which Wildspitze reigns supreme, and the champions of Stubai Alps, headed by Zuckerhütl, which stretch to the east.
Although the usual routes on Hohe Geige are not technically as difficult as, for example, the summits of the neighbouring Kaunergrat, each approach to the mountain is still very demanding and the latter is notoriously crumbly. The classical approach via the southern face ("normalweg") has been increasingly discouraged in recent years due to the objective danger of its extreme crumbling, so the recommended ascent and descent along the western ridge are along the route of the former easier climbing route, which is now protected in key places.
