Description of peak:
The Sommerwand is a relatively long ridge that rises like a mighty rock barrier above the upper part of the Oberbergtal, hiding from the valley view the amphitheatre-like cirque, which hosts the smaller Sommerwand Glacier, located between the Sommerwand and Knotenspitz ridges.
Among the several ridge walls, only the highest and the lowest, Innere and Vordere Sommerwand, are of tourist interest; the latter is the only one with a marked trail and can be climbed without any serious climbing or ascent over the glacier.
Innere Sommerwand is the only named peak in the ridge above 3000 m and is situated above the glacier of the same name on the southern edge of the Sommerwand ridge, which connects to the Kräulspitz ridge via the Kräulscharte saddle.
Although the route to Innere Sommerwand is not marked and requires a certain degree of mountaineering (orienteering and climbing) skills, the summit is quite popular due to the relatively easy to traverse and uncracked approach glacier, the primitive ambience of the route and the unique view from the heart of the Alpeine highlands; most of the surrounding peaks are technically and orienteeringally more demanding, so Innere Sommerwand represents one of the best opportunities for the well-prepared mountaineer to visit the highest peaks of the Alpeine mountain range.
