Description of peak:
Kalkwand is a large mountain in the eastern part of the Habicht group of the central Stubai Alps. Thanks to its attractive views, the low difficulty of the route and the proximity of the Innsbrucker Hütte, which is the starting point for the ascent of the popular Habicht, Kalkwand is quite well visited. As it is only a few minutes' climb from the traverse below to the summit, it is often casually climbed by mountaineers who are otherwise continuing on to the daring Ilmspitze, which is reached by the famous, moderately difficult ferrata.
Perhaps the Kalkwand's greatest charm lies in the unique views it offers, especially of the mighty Habicht and the sharp Ilmspitze, between which it serves as a linking massif. Also worthy of mention are the views that descend almost 1500 m into the Gschnitz valley.
A short trip to Kalkwand can be a pleasant diversion from the (two-day) hike to Habicht, but it can also serve as an intermediate point on the way to the Ilmspitze or as a slightly easier alternative to it.
