Kókkini ámmos / Red beach (Crete)

Description of mountain:
The Red Beach or. Kókkini ámmos (gr. Κόκκινη άμμος) is located near the settlement of Mátala on the southern coast of Crete in Greece. Mátala is connected to both major cities to the north by road, i.e. with Heraklion (to the north-east) and Rethimno (to the north-west). Public transport is frequent in the summer months.

Kókkini ámmos in translation means "red sand". The beach is sandy and secluded, you can reach it by boat or by a hike over the Cape Mátala (Ákra Mátala) with about 85 meters of altitude gain over rugged terrain at times (recommendation: wear shoes). Two bars exist on the beach, both have a special hippie touch. A section of the beach is for nudists. The water is crystal clear, typical for southern Crete. The Lybian sea is also a bit warmer than the Aegian in the north.
