Description of peak:
Mount Kriváň is the first dominant peak of the High Tauern, seen from the west, and belongs to the Tatra National Park. It rises above the Liptov valley with its characteristic pyramidal peak.
At 2,494 m above sea level, KriváňXX is one of the highest peaks in Slovakia and the Carpathians. Since the second half of the 19th century, this mountain has been a symbol of Slovak national consciousness. In 1840, the Hungarian monarchists loyal to the Emperor of Hungary erected an obelisk on the top of Kriváň to commemorate the ascent of King Friedrich August II of Saxony. In the same year. A few years later, this obelisk was destroyed by Slovak patriots during one of their 'popular excursions' - a kind of Slovak national pilgrimage. The first such excursion took place on 16 August 1841, in which Ľudovít Štúr and Michal Hodža participated. In the year of the Memorial, 1861, Štefan Marko Daxner organised the biggest hike to Kriváň. Since 1955, these Kriváň walks have been dedicated to the Slovak National Uprising of 1944.
From 1960 to 1990, the image of this peak adorned the national coat of arms of Czechoslovakia. Today, it is depicted on the back of Slovak one-, two- and five-cent coins. The mountain's particularly striking shape makes it the subject of various Slovak myths and legends.
