Description of peak:
At 2713 m, Watzmann - Mittelspitze is the highest peak of the Watzmann massif. The Watzmann is the third highest mountain in Germany, or the first highest mountain to be located entirely on German territory. The three main peaks on the western ridge are (in north-south direction): Hocheck (2651 m), Mittelspitze (2713 m) and Sudspitze (2712 m). The massif also includes the 2307 m high peak of the Watzmannfrau (or Kleiner Watzmann) and the Watzmannkinder, 5 lower peaks between the main ridge and the Watzmannfrau. The entire mountain massif is located in the eastern Bavarian Alps, south of Berchtesgaden, near Salzburg in Austria, and is part of the Berchtesgaden National Park. The first person to climb the highest peak (Mittelspitze, in 1800) was the Slovenian priest and passionate mountaineer Valentin Stanič.
