Description of peak:
Zla Kolata lies in the vast Prokletije mountain massif, which straddles the borders of three countries - Albania to the north, Montenegro to the east and Kosovo to the south. The Prokletijee are among the southernmost part of the Dinaric Mountains and are relatively high, the highest peak of the Prokletije being Jezerski vrh or Maja Jezercë (2,694 m, located in Albania), Đerovica (2,656 m in Kosovo) and Zla Kolata or Kollata e keqe (2,534 m in Montenegro).
The mountains are more rocky in the north and more grassy in the south (a bit like our Karawanks), rich in water, numerous lakes and green valleys where sheep graze, and at lower elevations also cattle and horses.
Zla Kolata (Albanian direct translation of the name: bad pasture) is situated in the Bjelić mountain range above the town of Gusinje in the municipality of Plav, in the easternmost pocket of Montenegro, which is surrounded on three sides by Albania.
In the immediate vicinity (less than 1 hour), from the Qafa e Kollates saddle, you can climb two neighbouring peaks: Maja Kolata or Dobra Kolata (2,528 m) and Ravna Kolata or Podi i Kollates (2,554 m), which is already in Albania.
