Planina Blato - Vrh Hribaric

Friday, 5. 11. 2010, was one of the last nice days before another major weather deterioration.
I started the trail from Planina Blato, to which the road is normally drivable. I arrived at Planina Krstenica just as the sun rose.
The still golden-yellow larches were as if burning. Really incredibly beautiful eek
To Planina Jezerce the trail is still dry, further on snow begins.
In the valley below Škednjovec there is more and more snow. It was literally rotten, sinking to the ground. So I stuck to the dry ridges on the left side as much as possible.
To the saddle between Škednjovec and Hribaric Peak the trail was quite strenuous. Further towards Hribaric Peak the snow became firmer and bore my weight. So walking became really enjoyable. Towards the peak one must be careful of countless screes and sinkholes that the snow has not yet fully covered.
Back the same way.

Peter2, again a wonderful tour and even nicer shots, which many of us will gladly open in winter days.nasmeh
If the weather permits, we plan on Saturday towards the hut 7J and of course if the road to Pl. Blato is drivable.mežikanje

Mukica, thanks!
The drivability of the road to Planina Blato is questionable, since it snowed at that height overnight, and now it is snowing in the valley too (Bohinj).

I am following the weather news and see that there will be a change to the original plan. Anyway, there will be some hills somewhere that will be accessible without winter gear, Bohinj area or Pokljuka.nasmeh Already looking forward to the new whitenessmežikanje

Well, just to say, today I was in the Fužinske Planine and the road to Pl. Blato is fully normally drivable, up there everything from 4x4 off-roaders to Clios. I started from Voj towards Krstenica, but due to the snow and the associated difficult path recognition, since there were no tracks anywhere, I changed my mind and returned to the valley over Pl. Blato and Vogar in a bad mood.nasmeh

Knap, first congrats for nice tour. If I understand correctly, you first climbed to the saddle between Vrh Hribaric and Škednjevcem and from there to
the peak, descent towards planina in Lazu. Did you do the whole tour with snowshoes? Thanks for reply.

From Krstenica towards Mišeljski preval, left under Škednjovcem and further as you wrote. Snowshoes were mandatory from one planina to the other. Lp

Yesterday (Thursday, February 20). From Planina Blato to Krstenica, then across Planina Jezerce to below Škednjovec and to Hribaric Peak. Over Koto 2362m (?) and Hribarice pass to Velska Valley and Velo Polje, then to Planina pod Mišelj vrhom and back over Jezerski Pass to Krstenica and to the valley.

The road to Blato is passable, the parking meter is off, no barrier. A centimeter of snow on the hunting path towards Krstenica covered occasional icy patches here and there, but it wasn't bad. From Krstenica onwards, in the upper part of Planina Jezerce it only broke through a little. Even better conditions were in the slopes of the valley below Škednjovec, which we chose for ascent among four different options of the Valley behind Debelem vrhom. With a bit of feel, we could avoid wind slabs, so we ascended quite comfortably on hard base. About half an hour below Hribaric Peak it got cloudy (as forecasted!). Maybe it was even better that way, since it wasn't hot.

Views from Hribaric Peak were beautiful despite cloudy weather. Similarly from Koto 2362m (?) over which we continued towards Hribarice pass. At times we just stopped and gawked around like first-graders to soak in as much beauty and solitude of this wilderness as possible.

In Velska Valley we were first accompanied by wind slab, lower down also quite large areas of dry unbonded snow, locally on icy base. In the whole valley there was only the track of one ski tourer (upwards, not down). The plain at Velo Polje, where it cleared again, was sunlit, untouched and pristine. Similarly no tracks towards Planina pod Mišelj vrhom. It was nice to walk, three or four centimeters of fresh snow on really hard and impenetrable base of course no obstacle.

It was quite different when we went further towards Jezerski Pass. The unmarked path we somehow found with navigation help, but it broke through unpredictably, even for the one walking behind. Already a bit worried because of the ending day, we stubbornly reached about 100m below the pass. There, in the steepest part, the conditions had greatly improved, which was very welcome. In suitably soft snow we could tread footsteps deep to the end of the toes; we reached the pass in a flash. The east slopes scorched during the day had already frozen, but with crampons we descended without problems to Planina Jezerce and in the dark to Krstenica. Descent on the hunting path was then just a necessary formality.

On the hunting trail to Krstenica there was less than a centimeter of snow, with some ice hidden here and there.1
