Bagni di Lusnizza - Cima Alta (Due Pizzi) (via Forcella Cuel Tarond)

Access to the starting point:
After crossing the Rateče or Predel border crossing, drive to Trbiz / Tarvisio, then continue along the old road to Udine. Follow this road to Lužnice / Bagni di Lusnizza. When you see a church on the left side of the road, take a sharp left turn, almost 180 degrees, into the town. Follow the road through the village and follow the signs for the Museo della Foresta. When the last houses in the village are finished, you will see an asphalted parking lot on the right-hand side of the road. You can park here or continue driving and then cross the motorway via the underpass. Just after the underpass, turn left and park in a suitable place on the roadside.

Path description:
From the starting point, continue along the narrow road parallel to the motorway. When you see the turn-off and the signs for the La Foresta rest area on the motorway, continue along the road for a few dozen metres and then you will see cart track on the right, which climbs gently into the woods.
Take the aforementioned cart track and shortly after the start of cart track you will see an old signpost along the way with markers for mountain pasture Malga Granuda and Due Pizzi. Follow cart track to a nearby crossroads where there are also signposts.
Continue left on the worse cart track past the wildlife feeding station, where you are also directed by the signs for mountain pasture Malga Granuda and Due Pizzi. On the right, the path leads to the Sella Bieliga saddle.
The slightly overgrown cart track leads through the woods to a clearing and the Rio Granuda Piccolo stream where another cart track joins from the left. Continue right for a short distance on the less and less visible cart track, then take a hard left and cross the stream. After crossing the stream, the path leads into the forest and then eastwards. The path climbs steeply and is damaged in some parts by avalanches and fallen trees. A path marked with orange dots then branches off to the right, and we continue straight ahead, continuing to cross the slopes to the east. From this crossroads, we cross the slopes for about 15 minutes and then the path turns sharply to the right. We then continue to climb for a long time in switchbacks mostly through the forest, occasionally crossing some quite overgrown clearings. The path is then rejoined from the right, marked with orange dots. The poorly trodden path continues to climb through the forest all the time and so offers no view. Just before mountain pasture Malga Granuda, we reach a marked crossroads.
Straight ahead is route 604 towards mountain pasture Malga Granuda, which is still a good 5 minutes' walk away, and we head right towards the Forcella Cuel Tarond notch. From the crossroads, we first climb a little through the forest, then the path becomes a little more level and leads us to the upper edge of the mountain pasture Malga Granuda. Here, we briefly get some views towards the Two Spires, and then the path leads us back into the forest. Continue for some time, crossing the slopes to the south-west. Here the trail passes mainly through forest, but also crosses some torrential ravines. Some caution is needed when crossing the largest ravine, as the path over the ravine is in poor condition and the snow stays in the ravine for a long time. The path then turns slightly to the left and starts to climb along dwarf pines and larch trees. This path, which is also becoming more and more scenic, leads to the Forcella Cuel Tarond notch where there is also a crossroads.
At the crossroads, we continue to the left and the path continues past some ruins from the First World War. Here you will also notice a sign along the way, indicating that the path is more difficult further on and it is recommended to use self-belaying. The path, which offers fine views to the south, soon begins to climb through the dwarf pines and leads to the base of the slopes of the Cuel dai Pez. A short climb continues cross-climbing before reaching a small notch where the first fixed safety gear will be seen. Some of the fixed safety gear on the way are also damaged so some extra caution is needed. The route called Via Ferrata Battaglione Alpini Gemona then crosses the slopes to the east and passes the summit of Cuel dai Pez on the right-hand southern side. A path then branches off to the left, quite inconspicuously, towards the aforementioned summit of Cuel dai Pez, and we continue to cross the slopes, which are partly covered with dwarf pines. A short section is again helped by a ropeway, and then the path leads to the north side of the ridge. Here you will see military tunnels along the way, and the path then descends more steeply. The path leads us to a short sheltered section where it is necessary to cross a steeper slope. The path and the fixed safety gear in this part are not usually in the best condition so some care is needed. The path then leads back to dwarf pines and passes to the south side of the ridge where the path becomes more difficult again. Here, with the help of a rope ladder, we cross the steep rocky slope, and then the path soon leads us over a deep ravine below the precipitous ridge of Gosadon Peak. Here the trail leads back to the north side and becomes less difficult. First a relatively steep descent, followed by a traverse of slopes mostly covered with dwarf pines. This path leads to a marked crossroads where the path 604 with mountain pasture Malga Granuda joins from the left.
From the crossroads, the path becomes steeper, so that you have to use your hands to help you climb. Later, the steepness eases and the path leads to the scree below the precipitous ridge of Monte Gosadon. Here the path turns left and crosses the aforementioned scree. On the other side of the scree, the path climbs steeply again and then crosses a short ravine where, due to the sand on the path, some caution is also needed. The slope then becomes more vegetated again with dwarf pines and then climbs towards the saddle between the peaks Cima Alta) and Monte Gosadon. Just below the saddle, the path also leads to a crossroads where a more difficult path branches off to the right towards the summit of Monte Gosadon.

We continue left at the crossroads and then climb through dwarf pines. On a short part of the route we also have a view to the south where Montaž is visible. Soon we are back at the crossroads where the path from the Zajzera and Dunja valleys joins us from the right.
Continue left again and then climb for some time through the dwarf pines on the western slopes of the summit of Cima Alta. Higher up, the dwarf pines ends and there is only a short climb up the lookout slope to the lookout peak.
