Ötzi Memorial is located about 70 m from the place where German hikers Helmut and Erika Simon (officially) discovered the natural mummy of a Copper Age man with the geographically inspired modern nickname "Ötzi" (also "Tisenjoch man" or less aptly "Similaun man") in September 1991.
Due to the favourable preservation conditions in the glacial world beneath the north-eastern ridge of Mount Fineilspitze, the corpse, which is currently on display in the Archaeological Museum in Bolzano, Itali, has been the subject of much analysis, speculation and conspiracy theories since its discovery.
Although his prehistoric life continues to stir the minds of many, despite years of research, we know more about him than about any other man of his time: his dietary habits and the diagnosis of his medical condition have been investigated, the numerous arrowheads in his body indicate that he probably died as a murder victim, and the objects he left behind testify to the daily life of the inhabitants of the Alps in the late 4th millennium BC.

The inscriptions on the memorial are multilingual, suggesting the idea of a symbolic reconciliation on the sidelines of the long-standing Italian-Austrian dispute over the ownership of the famous mummy.

Two marked and not too demanding paths lead to the monument, which is situated below the Fineilspitze massif and the Hauslabjoch Pass (3283 m), and is therefore a popular excursion point with beautiful views towards the Schnalskamm Group in the Ötztal Alps, deep into the Vernagta valley in South Tyrol and towards the high peaks of the western part of the Eastern Alps.
