Veliki Medvejk / Monte Orsario

Description of peak:
Veliki Medvejk (also Medvedjak or Medvedjek; Italian: Monte Orsario) is a 472 m high peak northwest of Sežana (air distance approx. 3 km). The border between Slovenia and Itali runs across the summit, as evidenced by several border stones at the summit itself and by information boards along the paths on the Italian side when approaching the border line. On the Italian side, the area around the hill is included in the 'Riserva Naturale del Monte Orsario', a 'landscape park' covering the area between the national border and the Fernetici-Repentabor road.

There is a small viewing platform at the top on the Italian side of the border. Underneath there is a cabinet with a registration book and a bilingual stamp. Somewhat surprisingly, there is no bench anywhere, so you can only rest on one of the many rocks. There is also no "rosette", which is almost taken for granted here, to show what can be seen in a certain direction.

With the exception of the summit itself, the hill is almost entirely covered with typical karst vegetation. From the viewing platform, in fine weather, we can enjoy views of the surrounding countryside, the church of Repentabor, and with a bit of luck all the way to the Alps, as well as Sežana and its surroundings from the vantage point on the Slovenian side.

From the Italian side, the summit is accessible via several well-marked trails from Fernetici or Repentaboro. From the Slovenian side, it was closed until the "fall of the borders", but today it can be reached by unmarked and poorly trodden paths from Sežana or Vrhovlje.
