Common Hazel (Corylus avellana)
Description:
It is one of the most common deciduous shrubs in our region.
It has entire, serrated leaves. The flowers are unisexual and develop before leafing. Male flowers are united in long hanging catkins, have 4 stamens each and lack corolla leaves. Female flowers are on short shoots in groups of 1-5 surrounded by bracts. They are recognized by the bright red styles of the pistils peeking out of the 'bud'.
