Hello,

I checked the last 10-15 pages, couldn't find a similar topic, so opening a new one.

In short, this winter I've started getting drawn to the mountains. The problem is I don't know how to tackle the first "ascent" to some two-thousander and which one it should be for the first time.

As the title says, I'm a beginner with mountains. Last summer I got hooked on mountaineering and did some hills or ferratas. Via italiana to Mangart saddle, Hanzova on Mojstrovka, ferrata Češka koča, Mangart Slovenian route, Mojstrana red, Jerman forest Martuljek and probably some more, but no experience with winter conditions.

I have beginner winter gear. No practical experience using crampons and ice axe.

Thinking of trying Mojstrovka (South route) for the first time. Say on a weekend when it's crowded enough, since no candidates to go with me right now.

Maybe recommend some beginner winter mountaineering course (Stratus, Kofler etc.)?
Thinking of hiring a mountain guide for a couple ascents?

Maybe overcomplicating, or just go for some easier route? Which one suggest? Is South route on Little Mojstrovka ok?

Thanks for all advice

Wishing you safe steps in 2020

Only advice: not alone, but with more experienced!

The advice is fine, expected or quite common. In practice it's harder than it seems, something like wanting to hire an intern/student with 5- or 10-year experience at work. Because experienced usually already have their own suitable company (if they want), they don't feel like dealing with inexperienced strangers. Understandable from several angles (inexperience, possible problems because of it, "slowness", responsibility, not knowing personality...)

I'm writing because I went through this myself or still am. Probably one of the worse choices is to stay home. Smart is to sign up for beginner course, maybe meet someone there and go somewhere together (though that's also a question). Intermediate is to choose technically easier ascent to mountain or hill you know in the season (same path). In this case I'd suggest for first winter tour Slemenova špica, Debelo peč or Viševnik. With all respect to mentioned peaks. Wouldn't go south to Mala mojstrovka first time, in between visit Stol, Raduha (from Koča na Loki) or Peco. And of course walk as much as possible with crampons, for stopping mandatory course.

I also started with winter Viševnik, otherwise as Bongo wrote Raduha from Loka, and even there you can easily be swept to the other side at two spotsmrk pogled , Mrežce, Kompotela, Debela peč, Vrh Korena, Peca, Uršlja gora excellent peaks for getting used to crampons. But I have the luck to hike with much more experienced than me. Thanks Robi T. for leading and all wonderful toursnasmeh

bongo, that's what clubs, ferajni, whatever you call it, are for. They still exist, thank God.
Forums can't replace that. Deadly dangerous to give (or accept) advice only via forums.

The only title will be Kofler.

I did a beginner two-day course on Zelenica with Stratus five years ago-they're good. Then same winter also a two-day course with PD Kamnik. Various mountaineering societies often organize them. In all societies there are guides with D license-for winter tours, who handle such tours well. In these courses they also tell what gear is best to buy for starting winter tours. Definitely better to start with easier guided winter tours. Especially wouldn't recommend solo snow adventures that end badly. Good luck!

Nobody wants their mountain visit to end badly. But it doesn't matter if you go alone or in company. The word adventure doesn't appeal to me at all.

There have already been some smart tips: Mojstrovka is not for the first snow tour, would suggest joining PD, preferably the closest one that has winter tours. And plenty of winter courses exist. And of course, there is NOT only one right address nasmeh

Would add that experienced ones shouldn't refuse easy tours. Sometimes something easier is nice, more for relaxation nasmeh

Thanks everyone for the tips. I think quite similarly as bongo mentioned.

Some things are "by the book" correct, some are what you can realize in practice.

best regards
