Hi! I'm new to very demanding protected paths in the mountains and via ferrata climbing, and something interests me about slings and 'resting'. A few months ago I was on a via ferrata course. They showed us how to use the sling, but since I didn't need and use it during that, I forgot which knots can be made? - I wouldn't have it exactly for resting, but because I take a lot of photos in the mountains and I'd like to additionally secure myself in more exposed sections to feel safer. I looked a bit on the internet and saw few slings, many more so-called ''loops'', which look to me like the ones we used on the course - is it the same thing? I also noticed several different lengths... how to look at that? The length? Regarding karabiners... is it better to have auto-locking karabiners or those with wiregate? I know I can ask all this in some hiking store and I will, but I'd still like to inquire a bit here too Thanks a lot in advance!

If I understand correctly, you'd like to hang in your climbing harness while photographing? If you take a regular sling, choose 60cm - that way you'll always have the karabiner within reach. Regular wiregate is still a standard for general use. As for the term sling itself, this - we used it for what you clip into the protection - which could be a sling or accessory cord (prusik). But I see that in Igla Šport under "popkovina" they sell sewn slings or daisy chain. Difference between sewn and regular sling is that with sewn it's easier to choose desired length, while regular has wider range of use.

Zebdi gave you a great answer! Adding some "theory"... "Popkovina" is a combination of a sewn endless sling and a wiregate carabiner. At one end you attach the sling with a cowboy knot to the climbing harness (to the belay loop). At the end of the sling you clip another wiregate carabiner. It's recommended to tie the sling to the wiregate with a water knot. This way you can very easily adjust the sling length as desired. I agree with Zebdi that a 60 cm sling is enough for your purpose. It must be shorter than the via ferrata lanyard arm. But some new via ferrata sets already have a made sling (you just need the carabiner), into which you can clip during rest without loading the "shock absorber".

I bought the sling, followed the recommended length and already tested it - all great. Big thanks to both for the answers!
