With a baby in the mountains

Hello,
Since we became new parents in November we have to adjust our mountain trips to our son. I'm interested which mountains would be suitable, meaning the path isn't too exposed.... We're thinking of Storžič, Raduha and such ""easy"" mountains. We're fairly experienced hikers, building fitness on surrounding hills. But before we mostly chose harder mountains, just so there were chains velik nasmehvelik nasmehvelik nasmeh

Best regards

There are many variants, nice to have some hut in between.

Raduha via Loka or Durce, Peca, Uršlja, Slemenova špica, Kofce and V. Vrh, Debela peč..... also Stol via some easier one.... but I think too long tours for such little suns aren't... like one two three hours... I know, chains are calling... but they waitnasmeh... And then it's even greater pleasure... You have to be careful everywhere..
Enjoy your tripsnasmeh

Yeah interesting that dad is now more often in photos hehehe....
That's exactly why I asked a bit, cuz we've never hiked such ""real easy"" ones....
But this year they'll be totally cool, mountains are beautiful everywhere anyway. Also tempted by 3-day tour to Triglav, but we'll see about snow, weather....
Thanks!!

Servis-Gorišek.com advises nasmeh

Since dad (who is now more often in photos nasmeh) is still on vacation, I borrowed his name and will write how I spent the first ten months.

First this. The listed trips require a very good (best!) backpack that costs well over 200 EUR and not some cheap ""thing"" from baby stores that surely wouldn't suit me, plus proper sun protection (sunscreen, hat or canopy over head, sunglasses etc.) and you have to think of many things before heading out.

Secured paths don't appeal to me yet and don't seem suitable for my age. It's also (proven!) very nice elsewhere. nasmeh

If you don't know where to go for a walk, here are some of my suggestions – first hand, as they say. Lubnik was, besides valley walks, the first hill I was on (of course without parents' help it never worked) already last July from St. Thomas church. In the same month when it was very hot in the valley, it was nice also on Jošt above Kranj, Blegoš and neighboring Koprivnik, Žingarica, mid-hill of northern Karavanke chain, Debela peč which you find on gore-ljudje and on Koželj path along cool Kamniška Bistrica. In August you could read about Krniške skale in Carnic Alps and picturesque mule track above Baška grapa, but I was also on Srednji vrh above Završnica through Zagon, at St. Kolman, all three Golaki in Trnovski gozd, Pršivec and Seven Lakes, Mačenski vrh above Rož, home Veliki Kozji and Kozji vrh (goats everywhere!) above Spodnje Jezersko. September brought views from Virnikov Grintovec, pleasant coolness of Pokljuka gorge, home rock in Sedovci, Smolnik above Vransko and jaunt around Cres and Lošinj which you already read about. In October I was on Gomila, Jeterbenk, Grmada above Ortnek, at Kobilji curk, big wedge with loop under Stena, Spodji and Zgornji Peričnik, in Blejski Vintgar, Veliki Zvoh and Slemenova špica. November was already colder, and I got a bit tired of the kangaroo too, so my sports stroller took me on forest roads from Predaslije to Jermanca, from Podkorn through Rateče to Tromeja (Peč) and early December also from Planica to Tamar. One of the last days of the old year I spent on sunlit Lisca. In the valley they were wandering in fog then…

New year brought abundant snow cover, so I managed differently. Sunny Primorska invited to Veli Vir waterfall and that one under Trebeše, then to interesting natural bridge and Skozno cave above Šmihel in Vipava valley, went also to check if dad described Kraški rob well in Planinski vestnik. For Marija Snežna, Ladrico cave no complaints (read: we didn't get lost). But since I didn't want to stay completely without white pleasures, on warmer days I took the chance and (first time in backpack) visited interesting stone table above Žirje, enjoyed view from in front of Church of Three Kings, visited Polhograjska Grmada with Katarina and was at St. Neža on Kum. February brought ascent to witch Slivnica from Cerknica (where we met matto nasmeh), Ratitovec from Prtovč (winter bivouac rocks!) and snowy joys above Koroški Rož. In midlands March already sang spring. Polhograjska Gora, ""Trenta"" above Beli potok, Šmarna Gora with Grmada, very nice waterfalls in Pekel, Rašica and ""double"" Iški Vintgar were my trips that month. April started with Korošaki waterfalls and Kamniški vrh, continued with very nice ascent to Javorjev vrh via Škrbina and Slaparjeva gora. Then Tošč, below described trip from this post, Porezen from Petrov Brdo, Čemšenika planina from Jesenovo village where the hut keeper was very friendly and heated water for my lunch for free and gave dessert, Koški waterfalls near Višnja Gora, Obolno, Pasja ravan, Sivka, and finally Lepenatka and Veliki Rogatec which we can call Dead monk too. Month of love started with May 1st hike to cliff of St. Lovrenc above home Lokavec, where Clusius marmot bloomed most beautifully just then. According to grandma's story my dad managed full May 1st ascent from valley to Lovrenc (five hundred meters up) at fourteen months on his own feet. Slowly and with adult hands help, but wouldn't let carry. Could be first signs of stubbornness. Anyway… How does the proverb about apple and tree go?

Have fun nasmeh

Thanks!!velik nasmeh Your little beauty is already a real mountaineer. Ours is 6 months old and really enjoys the backpack (not exactly that super one) it's mid-price range! Recently found a really super helmet. So waiting for weather and off to nicer ones!

Is it important here that everything is ""in""?

@ Miri no, I don't even care if everything is "in", but child's comfort is important..... This backpack that Julija has is really super, nicely padded...

It's not about everything being "in", but about comfort (as predecessor wrote) especially child's safety and health. Who knows me knows I'm the last who'd care about something being "in", but with child's health there's no dilemma and shouldn't be at least in my opinion.

One thing is a walk in a flat park or shopping centers, completely different mountain tour. Child is surely more comfortable in products of top experts in the field. When you seat it in child carriers, difference is obvious - I've tried quite a few. What I don't want is to ruin child's health by saving. We're already in eyes of many 'normal' people a bit crazy parents who go to mountains with kids. Your "in" would apply only if choosing backpack color or similar.

Everyone decides themselves if to take child to mountains and if so, in what. Consequences of overdoing and wrong gear can be very serious.

I'll save elsewhere.

Good luck!

One more thing. To all planning to carry kids to mountains I warmly recommend reading this:

Boštjan Hauptman - All about backpacks for carrying children

For backpack for carrying children it's mainly important parents know where and how they'll use it. Trekking back is for hills, while backpacks with mesh back better serve at sea or trips and in city, that's when not carrying child longer than an hour.
Hauptman really wrote good guide. But till today all mentioned child carrier backpacks changed, gained functions, certificates, lost weight and changed backs, ...

Read which are best backpacks for carrying children, how to choose and buy right backpack for carrying child and carrying children in world and time.

But you can get these quality ones like Deuter, also nicely preserved used ones for 100. I got one and now the second is carried in it and it's still the same. Almost no signs of use.

I recommend Deuter Kid Comfort 3 (we had it for two children), and as kotnik already wrote, it's worth checking Bolha.

I also carried (and still do) my daughter quite a bit, first in carrier (Ergobaby), then backpack (Deuter 3 for 150 € on Bolha (on Bolha you find very very old versions of this backpack too, helpful - if backpack already has footrests for legs it's ok).
But 6m baby definitely not big and stable enough for backpack. Use carrier instead. Backpack recommended only when child sits up and sits alone (not when you lean it somewhere and it stays all hunched). So around 8m.

My favorite quick route is Jošta, for more demanding Begunjščica, Veliki vrh, Storžič (if not bothered by very high leg lifts - this route too hard for me with 15kg on back).
