On Friday it was time again for the traditional (at least for me) tour along the Slovenian-Croatian border.
In short 120km (of which at least three quarters "interesting" gravel) and 2500m ascent.
In detail it goes like this; I park at the end of Jelšane just before the turn-off to Novokračine past which the path leads me to Zabič, where the asphalt ends (by then already cca 250m ascent), then continue on gravel. The road is strewn with not very friendly stones, the ascent is not too bad. At about 900m on a scenic promontory I spot the sea for the first time (at least it seems through the mist). Then continue (a bit up, then down and up again) to the pass at 1230m. In between, of course good company of border guards. By here already 1100m ascent accumulated. Follows cca. 15 km descent with ideal gradient, then some more ascent and short descent to Babno Polje, where for about 10km I again surrender to the luxury of asphalt.

Border crossing at the official point without incidents. In Prezid I stop at the store, buy another classic (beer, coca cola and politanke - no sandwich alas, they ran out of bread). Listening to the shop assistant talking with an older local, I get a bit sad. They speak Slovenian much better than many in Slovenia. The path leads me on of course. At Kozji vrh turn right to Milanov vrh then on through maze of forest roads to Smrekova draga. At Milanov vrh I switch on Garmin (I've done this tour several times already but still in doubt at some junctions). Not too fast, at forest hut in Smrekova draga only at 5 pm. Quickly off to Lisina, at junction spot very interesting skeleton part. Probably bear. Didn't meet any on this path, no tracks either. But spring before last in under an hour met three bear pairs (first two proper big, then two mums with "little ones"). Eyed each other a bit then they took off up the hill. Surprised the last mum as she came from behind bush, both a bit scared. Then eyed till her little one came. From Lisina (ca 1300m) on to Gomance then downhill. Midway down at ca 750m sharp right again along border on old roads to Lisec and Rupe. From Lisec on pitch dark so last part of path (bad macadam) most adventurous.
Orientation very demanding, use of special 1:25000 mandatory, no garmin track alas as path too long for my Nokia E52 capacity. Have markings recorded electronically as OziExplorer. One of top tours, not many views but one day in lonely forests far from mad crowds amply recharges batteries.
