Scuglielârs - Veliki Karman / Monte Chiampon (CAI 713)

Access to the starting point:
From central Slovenia, take the Gorenjska motorway to the Hrušica exit and through the Upper Sava Valley past Rateč towards Trbiž / Tarvisio. At the western end of Trbiz, take the SS13 trunk road towards Udine. Leave the road before Humino / Gemona dei Friuli and follow the local road to the city centre. Just before it, on the left, there is a panoramic road which climbs in 34 serpentines to the agritourism at mountain pasture Karman. We leave the road at one of the serpentines, where a section of steep concrete maintenance road branches off to the left. After 200 m, we reach a parking area in front of the bridge of the Torrente Vegliato torrent.

Path description:
From the parking lot there are two approaches to the Predol saddle above mountain pasture Karman. The first is as follows: a few metres before the parking lot, a stone track branches off to the right and climbs in an arc over the bed of the Vegliato stream to a crossroads (approx. 800 m). To the left, a section of the track crosses the bed of the Vegliato stream, where it then joins the second version of the approach to mountain pasture. We continue along the main path to the right. Follow it up a steep, shallow gully in long switchbacks to the edge of the forest ridge, where you turn left and continue along the clearing in a gentle ascent past the holiday cottages to the nearby agritourism farm.
The second approach - preferable to the first in the case of a direct ascent to Veliki Karman - is as follows: the concrete maintenance road climbs from the bridge for another kilometre in serpentine lines parallel to the gravel bed of the dam-regulated Vegliato stream. It then ends and becomes a track which leads to a crossroads after about 100 m. A path branches off to the right, crossing the torrential bed of the Vegliato and joining the first version of the approach to mountain pasture. From the crossroads, our path goes straight on for some time parallel to the torrent bed. Soon, however, this path also splits: the lower part runs parallel to the stream, the upper part turns slightly to the left, but at about 970 m the two paths rejoin. When you reach the nearby Predol saddle, you join a wide track that winds in short switchbacks up the steep slope towards Karman.
The track first winds along the edge of the forest and then in many short switchbacks along an increasingly steep grassy slope to the crumbly rocky terrain at the edge of a precipitous ravine. It is ascended via a number of small steel cables, crossing to the left under a rocky peak, which is bypassed, and then, using the fixed safety gear, continued over a shelf (the Gospodichna Pass, Passo della Signorina, 1359 m; along the way there is a memorial to the two ill-fated Friulian women mountaineers). From there, over a short, broken and rather scraggly, but not too steep, wall, over which you continue over several steel cables, and then in keys up a steep grassy slope straight to the summit lookout.
