Tugliezzo - Lopič / Monte Plauris (CAI 701)

Access to the starting point:
From central Slovenia, take the Gorenjska motorway to the Hrušica exit, and from there through the Upper Sava Valley past Rateč to Trbiž / Tarvisio. In the western part of Trbizo, continue on the SS13 trunk road towards Udine through the Kanalska valley and the Bela valley to the village of Karnija / Carnia (259 m), where you leave the SS13 road and turn right at the crossroads in the village. Continue on the local road under the viaduct to the next junction. It goes towards the cemetery on the left, and we go straight on, first passing the former Marussig barracks on the right, and from there uphill in some serpentines to the former mountain pasture, now the hamlet of Tugliezzo (503 m) with its holiday cottages and chapel.

Path description:
Pass the chapel and walk another 10 metres to the forest road turning right and follow it to the nearby crossroads. The main road, blocked by a barrier, winds all the way to the Elio Franz shelter, and we continue on the left-hand side, past the nearby hay meadow and the holiday house on Plano dei Portolans, where the road turns into a track. We follow it into the woods just above the ravine of the Rio Lavarie stream to the Elio Franz shelter. From there, the ascent is a little steeper, initially through beech woods, which are replaced by scrub at higher altitudes. In addition to the steepness, the ascent is made more difficult by the heavily rutted path in a number of keys, but with increasingly beautiful views of the Carniola peaks, the Maleet Pass (1625 m) is soon reached.
From the Maleet Pass, descend a few metres to the junction with the CAI 728a, past the Bellina shelter. From there, go straight along the path across the valley above the valley head, through the dwarf pines, past boulders and over scree to the base of the summit of Lopič. Signs point to the right. The path climbs across the scree and in the keys to the ridge. Passing an indistinct notch in the ridge, turn left to the south side and follow a slight track to the summit lookout.
