Description of peak:
With its 1061 m high peak, Ivanščica is the highest and also the largest mountain in northern Croatia. Its back is 27 kilometres long, from Lepoglava in the west to Novi Marof in the east. It is the watershed between the Sava and the Drava rivers. Its former name was Očura, but today it takes its name from the church order of Ivanovcima, which also gave its name to the largest castle at its foot, Ivancu.
The mountain is almost completely forested, but also has some small cliffs. At the southern foot of the mountain there are also old castles, unfortunately now in ruins (from west to east: Oštrcgrad, Belecgrad, Milengrad, Grebengrad, on the south side Pusta Bela and Bela on the north side).
Despite its relatively modest height, the Ivanščica peak is a fine vantage point from which, with a good view, one can see as far as Triglav and Snežnik in the west, Dachstein in Austria in the north-west, Budapest in the north-east, the Slavonian Hills in the east and Kozara in the south. The mountain is a popular destination for mountaineers from Ivanec and the surrounding villages, as well as for mountaineers from Zlatar and the surrounding area, as evidenced by the many trails to the summit.
It is a misconception of some people that Ivanščica is the highest peak in the Pannonian part of Croatia, which is Trdinov vrh / Sveta Gera Žumberačka gora / Žumberak. Just below the peak is the most important mountain hut Pasarićev dom, on the southern slope there are also the mountain huts Majer above the village of Lobor, Belečka hut below the old castle of Belecgrad, Lujček's hut on Pokojac and the hut on Grebengrad.
