Description of peak:
Kleiner Solstein is the highest peak of the famous Nordkette ridge barrier, which hides the central part of the Karwendel from the valley and creates a distinctive view of Innsbruck and the surrounding area.
Despite its name (Kleinersmaller), Kleiner Solstein outclimbs the neighbouring Großer Solstein by almost a hundred metres - the reason for the apparent discrepancy in the name probably lies in the fact that the sharper Kleiner Solstein is considerably less shoulder-shouldered and spacious than its shorter neighbour, and the approach to it is also considerably more difficult.
Kleiner Solstein was until recently considered to be a rather difficult mountain to reach, but some time ago it was marked and protected at key points. This has made the highest peak of the well-known ridge accessible to a wider audience, but the ascent still retains the characteristics of a more challenging unmarked route. The summit offers a fine view of the heart of the picturesque Karwendel, the Inn valley and the Stubai and Ötztal Alps to the south.
